In 1852 the city of Vasa/Vaasa burned to the ground in a great fire and with it the local school. In 1863 a new school was nearing completion and request went out to Johan Ludwig Runeberg (who had also studied in that very school) to write a song for the opening ceremony. Runeberg however, didn't take requests, but forwarded the message to his friend Zacharias Topelius who took up the offer. In 1864 the text "Wasa Marsch" was ready and Karl Collan soon composed the music. The song became quite popular and was performed frequently. In 1898 Alpo Noponen translated the text to finnish (previously it was only in swedish) which only increased the songs popularity. It was no surprise then that this song was to become the official regional anthem of Ostrobothnia (of which Vaasa is the capital).
