This is a drive on Pennsylvania State Route 3042 in Centre County. SR 3042 is the former alignment of US 322 through Port Matilda and the ascending of Bald Eagle Mountain toward State College prior to the 2008 completion of I-99. SR 3042 also carried the US 220 designation from 2002-2008 when US 220 was rerouted along US 322 in preparation for the completion of I-99. From I-99’s Exit 61 to the split with SR 3040 to ascend Bald Eagle Mountain, SR 3042 carries the Alternate US 220 designation. When the route was US 322 and US 220, it was once the main road into State College from points south and west. Now SR 3042 is an alternate or back way. Pennsylvania’s 4-digit state routes are mostly secondary routes, although some have a major purpose and do serve towns. The 4-digit state routes stay within their respective counties and are not unique, meaning that there are multiple SR 3042s across the state. The numbers of the 4-digit routes follow a pattern where a county is divided into 4 quadrants. 1000 numbered routes are in the northeast quadrant, 2000 routes are in the southeast quadrant, 3000 routes are in the southwest quadrant, and 4000 routes are in the northwest quadrant.
