Beno Mgaya: Role Model in Avocado and Potato Farming 🌱 From Burial Groups to Agribusiness Transformation In Lusitu Village, Njombe, transformation began not in boardrooms — but in gatherings of villagers mourning loss. “Before we engaged with SAGCOT (now AGCOT),” recalls Beno Mgaya, “our community was primarily organised around burial groups.” These groups, born out of grief, were built on trust, discipline, and collective responsibility. Mgaya and his peers saw potential: the same solidarity that managed funerals could also manage farms. With SAGCOT’s support, this vision took root. The burial group evolved into Lusitu Agro-Business, a farmer-led enterprise now empowering thousands of smallholders: 🥔 Potatoes → Yields doubled to 20 tons per acre through clean seed, training, and collective marketing. 🥑 Avocados → Farmers co-invest, access certified seedlings, receive training, and secure guaranteed export markets. ✨ What began as solidarity in loss has become solidarity in growth. Communities that once gathered for funerals now gather to celebrate harvests. 👉 Beno Mgaya’s journey proves this truth: social capital is real capital. When communities trust, organise, and partner strategically, they can move from survival to prosperity.
