Long before Danville became a city, the region was home to the Miami, Kickapoo, and Potawatomi peoples, with several important trails crossing the area. The presence of salt deposits just west of present‑day Danville drew early settlers, making salt production one of the first major economic activities. Danville was officially founded on April 10, 1827, shortly after Vermilion County itself was organized in 1826. The town began on land donated by Guy W. Smith (60 acres) and Dan W. Beckwith (20 acres). It quickly became the county seat thanks to its central location and early economic importance. As pioneers arrived, Native trails evolved into roads, and the region’s rich black soil supported a thriving agricultural economy. Early Vermilion County history is marked by farming, livestock, and the continued influence of salt production. By the mid‑1800s, coal mining transformed Danville and the surrounding county. Coal became the dominant industry, attracting workers, fueling railroads, and shaping the region’s economic identity for decades. Yes, our town boasts some familiar faces like most towns if one digs enough. Our town is filled with hard working people who have seen salt and coal mines, WWII efforts, the automobile industry, farmers and each and every thing in between. I make the most of my town and appreciate the stories of some of those who originated or ended up here.
