"If you cannot answer the question WHAT after the verb, then it is intransitive." For example: The waves lap the beach. Here we can ask, "The waves lap WHAT?" The answer is "the beach." Therefore in this case LAP is a transitive verb. Now compare this to another example: The waves lap playfully. Here, the sentence doesn't and can't answer the question, "The waves lap WHAT?" Instead the sentences answer the question HOW? "The waves lap HOW?" "The waves lap PLAYFULLY." Therefore in this case the verb LAP is intransitive. "Intransitive verbs answer the questions WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and HOW. Transitive verbs always answer the question WHAT."
