Marie offers a handy trick to remember transitive and intransitive verbs in this excerpt from Lesson 11 of The Basic Cozy Grammar Course: The best way to distinguish between transitive and intransitive is to see if you can answer the question WHAT. https://www.cozygrammar.com Speaking to us from the beach in front of her cozy beach cottage, Marie shares a simple and effective way to distinguish between transitive and intransitive verbs: "If you can answer the question WHAT after the verb, then it is transitive," she explains. "If you cannot answer the question WHAT after the verb, then it is intransitive." For example: The waves lap the beach. Here we can ask, "The waves lap WHAT?" The answer is "the beach." Therefore in this case LAP is a transitive verb. Now compare this to another example: The waves lap playfully. Here, the sentence doesn't and can't answer the question, "The waves lap WHAT?" Instead the sentences answer the question HOW? "The waves lap HOW?" "The waves lap PLAYFULLY." Therefore in this case the verb LAP is intransitive. "Intransitive verbs answer the questions WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and HOW. Transitive verbs always answer the question WHAT."
