And finally it arrived, the recreation of Carousel, the biggest enigma of Gorillaz's phase 3 and the most ambitious project of Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn. For this recreation I used the song "Darkness to Light" as a base, since for me, this song is a reuse of the main idea of Carousel, since the rhythm is very carnival-like, and the lyrics directly mention "Carousel Of My Life". I also took into account the following descriptions: Description of Carousel Feat. HBE: "Performed live once in 2008 at Love Music, Hate Racism during a The Good, The Bad & The Queen performance. Professional video recording does exist with the rest of the concert, but will likely never release". Description of the segment 15/15: "The last of the confirmed segments from Carousel. Damon has described this as being the final segment in Carousel, being centred on "a carousel with creatures on it", acting as a flashback "of your entire life". Could likely be an alternate version of the "Carousel" song played during the show for The Good The Bad and the Queen". Description of Carousel (The Project in general): "Roughly 70 to 80 songs were recorded during the Carousel era, with the final project being comprised of 15 "stories paired to music". The album portion of Carousel was to be recorded with an in-house band, either Hypnotic Brass Ensemble or sinfonia ViVA as confirmed by André de Ridder". I have a theory that Carousel (the song played in Love Music Hate Racism) is the same song that would appear in the 15/15 segment of Carousel, since the description of both coincides in being centered on a carousel with monsters that serve as flashbacks to life. Taking this into account, I added Brass Ensemble MIDIs to justify HBE's participation in this song, and here I imitated the melody of Darkness To Light with the brass. Additionally, I added percussion samples from Plastic Beach. It's not mentioned in the description, but the essence of Carousel centers primarily on the combination of The Good, The Bad & The Queen and Gorillaz, both Damon Albarn's bands. So, I decided to imitate the beat of Pirate Jet to give it the carnival-like feel it needs, and acoustic instruments that are meant to be the essence of The Good, The Bad & The Queen, thus achieving a balance between the two and resulting in this song. While this is the finished song, I plan to make another version that incorporates an intro and outro to make it longer, and above all, to connect with the other segments of Carousel that I will be recreating over the coming months. One thing I feel is that over the years, Damon has been reusing many ideas from Carousel, whether in lyrics, beats, or other elements. A prime example of this is the album Wonder.Land and Merrie Land, which I consider particularly noteworthy for the carnival-like feel of many of its songs. Also, it's been said that several ideas from Carousel were largely suggested by Paul Simonon (bassist for The Clash, TGTB&TQ, and during the 2010 Plastic Beach tour), who also appears on Merrie Land, leading me to believe there's a small possibility that several ideas from Carousel were revisited in Merrie Land. The songs used were: Darkness to Light (Studio Version) - From The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows (2021) by Damon Albarn Darkness to Light Live at The Union Capel - From The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows Deluxe (2021) by Damon Albarn Pirate Jet (Beat recreated with samples) - From Plastic Beach (2010) by Gorillaz MIDI Instruments for the Brass I hope you enjoyed this recreation. Personally, this project is by far one of my favorites I've done on the entire channel. Stay tuned to the channel, because as I mentioned, I plan to recreate more Carousel segments and release an alternate version of Carousel with an intro and outro. See you later! ;) Disclaimer: The songs used in this recreation are not mine. All rights reserved to Gorillaz, Damon Albarn and The Labels EMI and Transgressive Records.
