Thru-Hiking the Southern Half of the Quebec Section (International Appalachian Trail - Eastern Continental Trail) The southern half of the Quebec section on the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) is where the Eastern Continental Trail (ECT) enters some of its most remote and rugged terrain. Leaving the gentler landscapes of New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island, hikers face steep mountain climbs, deep forests, and long stretches of wilderness with few resupply points. This section is a raw, untamed experience that demands self-sufficiency and endurance. What to Expect ⛰ Tougher Terrain & Elevation Gains – • The Matapédia Valley and Gaspé foothills bring the first major climbs since Maine. • Steep ascents, sharp ridgelines, and rocky descents replace the rolling terrain of earlier sections. 🌲 Remote Wilderness & Deep Forests – • Large sections of untouched backcountry, with days between towns or road crossings. • No shelters or official campsites—hikers must rely on stealth camping and rustic backcountry refuges. 🌦 Unpredictable Weather & Harsh Conditions – • Cold mornings, high winds, and heavy rain are common. • Thick fog rolls over ridgelines, making navigation more difficult. 🐻 Wildlife Encounters – • Black bears, moose, and lynx roam these forests. • Fewer people on trail means wildlife sightings increase—and so do risks. 🏕 Long Food Carries & Limited Resupply – • Few trail towns—hikers must plan ahead for long stretches without access to stores. • Small villages exist, but resupply options are spread far apart. 🚧 Leading into the Gaspé Peninsula – • This section builds toward the rugged highlands of the Gaspé, where the mountains grow taller, the weather more intense, and the trail more demanding. Why This Section is a Major Test • No easy exits—this is deep backcountry trekking. • Significant elevation gain—steeper than anything since New England. • Few hikers, no major infrastructure, and full reliance on backcountry skills. The True Wilderness of the IAT The southern half of Quebec’s IAT is where the trail becomes wild, isolated, and unforgiving. Completing it means entering the heart of the Gaspé Peninsula, with the Chic-Choc Mountains and Cap Gaspé still ahead.
