India is likely to commence its much awaited Population Census early next year! A lot hinges on the outcomes of this exercise, most critically the delimitation of India’s electoral constituencies. Delimitation is the process of drawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies in a country which determines two things: voter eligibility by location, and the apportionment of parliamentary seats for each State. The outcome of delimitation has important implications for representative democracy in India. Carrying forward our ongoing work on delimitation in India, the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy organised a virtual panel discussion on Delimitation in India: Redrawing Borders, Redefining Democracy to gain insights into practical concerns that previous delimitation exercises faced, and what the impending delimitation can learn from them. We will be in the esteemed company of: Dr. A. K. Verma, a notable political scientist and Director of the Centre for the Study of Society and Politics (CSSP) in Kanpur. Dr. Verma specializes in government and politics, with a special focus on electoral systems and delimitation. Mr. Sanjay Kumar, a distinguished Professor and Co-Director at Lokniti, a research program under the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). Renowned for his expertise in electoral politics, Kumar has applied advanced survey methodologies to explore themes spanning Indian democracy, youth engagement, and socio-political transitions.
