Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. About the story: On 28 July 1944, in the small Montenegrin village of Velika, one of the most brutal civilian massacres of World War II took place. As German forces retreated from the Balkans under pressure from advancing Allied and Partisan troops, they launched Operation Draufgänger, a punitive campaign meant to crush resistance along the Lim River. After suffering defeats near Andrijevica, elements of the 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division “Prinz Eugen”, together with soldiers of the 21st Waffen Mountain Division “Skanderbeg” and local auxiliary units, descended on Velika in a two-hour frenzy of destruction. They burned homes, looted property, and murdered entire families. More than 428 civilians—mostly women, children, and the elderly—were killed. Survivors described unimaginable scenes: toddlers skinned alive, infants shot in their mothers’ arms, and families burned inside their houses. The cruelty was so extreme that even German officers later tried to suppress internal reports about it. Yet in his daily command briefing, SS General August Schmidhuber praised the operation as a success, boasting of his division’s “achievements.” But the killers did not escape justice forever. Within months, the Skanderbeg Division collapsed, plagued by desertions and disgrace. Himmler disbanded it, folding its remaining ethnic German soldiers into the “Prinz Eugen” Division, now under Schmidhuber’s command. The unit continued committing atrocities in Croatia as it retreated north—until the war ended. Schmidhuber was captured by Yugoslav forces on 11 May 1945, tried for massacres and mass deportations, and hanged in Belgrade in February 1947. His soldiers met an even darker fate. On 11 May 1945, the remnants of the “Prinz Eugen” Division surrendered to Yugoslav forces near Celje, Slovenia. Nearly all were executed without trial. A mass grave uncovered in 2010 revealed more than 2,000 bodies—stripped, bound with wire, and shot. The slaughter in Velika remains one of the least-known but most horrifying crimes committed in the Balkans during the Second World War. More than 1.2 million people died in wartime Yugoslavia—over half of them civilians.
