Besieged by the Zulus: Eshowe 1879 While the world knows about Rorke's Drift from the famous 1964 film "Zulu," another British garrison faced an even longer ordeal during the Anglo Zulu War of 1879. This is the story of the Siege of Eshowe - 71 days of isolation, disease, and determination deep in Zululand. Following the catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana on 22nd January 1879, Colonel Pearson's Number 1 Column found itself cut off at Eshowe Mission Station. While Lord Chelmsford's centre column had been destroyed and the defenders of Rorke's Drift earned immortality in a single night's fighting, Pearson's 1,400 men faced over two months surrounded by Zulu warriors. This video tells the lesser-known story of Captain Warren Wynne, the Royal Engineer whose brilliant defensive works saved the garrison but who would never live to see victory. You'll hear about Captain Charles Shervinton, whose act of heroism rescuing Private Brooks should have earned him the Victoria Cross - but didn't. And discover the fate of Lieutenant Main, who narrowly escaped death at Isandlwana only to face 71 days wondering if his luck would hold. The Siege of Eshowe was a test of endurance. Disease killed more men than Zulu bullets. Supplies dwindled to dangerous levels. Communication was limited to a makeshift heliograph when the sun wasn't hidden by rainstorms. Yet through engineering genius, individual acts of bravery, and sheer determination, the garrison held out until Chelmsford's relief column defeated the Zulus at Gingindlovu and lifted the siege. This is British military history at its finest - a story of courage, ingenuity, and sacrifice that deserves to be remembered alongside the more famous battles of the Zulu War.
