Unfortunately, I did not get to witness the singing monks of Santo Domingo de Silos. However, I did get a pleasant sleep and a beautiful September morning in 2022 to explore this small town with its impressive monastery. While I had heard about the terrible wildfires Spain and Portugal had endured this past year, it was not until I visited this town that I saw the devastation. While most of the villages including Santo Domingo de Silos were spared, the hills surrounding were charred to an astounding degree. The scenes were almost apocalyptic. I cannot even imagine how difficult it must have been to protect the towns that they could. In any case, not all trips can be through rose-colored glasses. In a strange sort of way, I thought KT Tunstall's songs "Paper Aeroplane" and "Someday Soon" worked well with the photos of my short visit to Santo Domingo de Silos. The lyrics from "Paper Aeroplane" include "the road to hell", "building a steeple", and "wanting the whole cathedral" as she is speaking about relationship woes while "Someday Soon" speaks about "swallowing things whole" and "taking it all in". I figured, "Why not?" Music from the monks would have been a bit trite anyway, right?
