Thank you so much for watching. Please feel free to follow me on social media www.instagram.com/isabellenoack facebook.com/its.isabellenoack Welcome to Senegal. The westernmost country in the mainland of the Old World - the term Old World refers to Africa, Asia and Europe. The country owns its name to the Senegal River. Senegal is also knows as the land of Teranga which in the local language means hospitality. This couldn’t be a truer nickname for this nation. Senegalese people are extremely hospitable, friendly, open and kind. You can’t walk down the street without being greeted by people asking how you are doing or if you want to join them for tea or lunch. The people in this country shine as bright as the sun and make Senegal even more beautiful than it already is. Speaking of sunshine - the climate in Senegal is Sahelian meaning its warm all year around, but there is a rainy season and during winter it can get a bit colder especially on the coast - cold means 17 degrees Celsius around 62 degrees Fahrenheit so nothing too crazy. Senegal is one of the safest and most stable countries in all of Africa making outings to clubs at night or jogging in the morning definitely and easily possible. Dakar - the the capital and largest city of Senegal is located on the Cap-Vert peninsula on the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and is the westernmost city in all of Africa, Asia and Europe. Dakar is home to some of the most beautiful and unique homes you can imagine. The city is also a place where tradition means modern lifestyle, so whether you want to move around by horse, foot, bus or cab, the choice is yours. But not just t he people, landscape and houses are five star in this country, Senegal has countless breathtaking, luxurious and completely stunning hotels. No wonder people like US Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton or Superstar Rihanna have stayed in Dakar. But you don’t have to stay in first-rated resort to experience the beauty, richness and greatness that is Senegal. Whether you are walking around in the city or strolling around on the beach, this country shines from almost every angle. Including from the top of the renaissance monument which is located in the heart of Dakar This monument is truly one of a kind, but so is the famous market called. And you know I am no t gonna leave this market without getting some delicious traditional senegalese food….it tastes so good, I am just going to keep eating. After all this food its time to take a boat to the island of Goree, located approximately 2 kilometres so 1.2 miles from the main harbour of Dakar. Around 1600 people live on this beautiful, peaceful little island, but behind this gorgeous place hides a horrible history. Goree played a crucial role in the trans Atlantic slave trade of the 16th to 19th century. My tour guide tells me all about the horrors that took place on this island. After European invaders to ok over the island and the whole country of Senegal through brutal colonisation, more than 20 Million slaves where either tortured, raped and killed on this island our taken to the Americas by boat where they were further abused and separated from their families if they had any left. Europeans would steal children and babies from their parents in exchange for a bottle of water. The house of slaves, which is one of the oldest buildings on Goree island is where thousands of slaves were put on top of each other without being allowed to eat, drink or go to the bathroom. Many died in here because of the circumstances. Others who were too weak and didn’t weigh enough were thrown into water like garbage including Babies, others where shipped off here in boats, all this took place here at the famous door of no return. Despite the indescribable evil that took place in here and in almost every other African country and which is still evident today, Senegal and the whole continent have in many ways managed to grow, glow and advance despite their devastating history. And even though their kindness and hospitality was horrible abused in the past, people here remain as open-hearted, kind, helpful and friendly as ever. Showing that darkness cant be overcome by darkness only light can do that, like one famous African once said. And if you are looking for light, love and life you will definitely find it here.
