ambient performance for modular synthesizer and ciat-lonbarde cocoquantus. an emotional arc in three parts, comprising modular reimaginations of prior works. pure, delicate tones intertwined in gentle melodies and flowing counterpoint, layered against a warm, saturated sea of textural loops. this was my first live performance in nearly two years. my last @ModularSanDiego performance was "circular" ( • circular // modular san diego june 2022 ) in june 2022. that set ended early for technical reasons, but some of those unheard plans & soundscapes were carried forward to this show. setlist: sun bubbles fall creek unit the deep glow of dusk patch notes: all four voices are sequenced by squarp hermod. oscillators, modulation: bass: instruo tš-l (sine output). pads/drones/swells: mutable instruments uPlaits (two-operator FM). melodies: mutable rings 1 (modal resonator), mutable rings 2 (FM voice). overall, modulation is kept to a minimum. voice parameters are set and left untouched; change over time is accomplished by letting notes ring out over other voices, rather than constant modulation. most movement is from the interaction between melodies and effects. SSF quantum rainbow 2's white noise output runs through an endorphin.es squawk dirty LPF, attenuated by a 2hp VCA, to modulate the SRR input of a happy nerding FXaid XL, increasing the grit of its blackhole reverb algorithm. mutable beads has some subtle internal random modulation applied to its grain & reverb parameters. ALM pam's new workout supplies random CV to cocoquantus via an external format jumbler; and is combined with self-patched quantussy chaotic modulation to intermittently shift and flutter the looping audio. filters, envelopes: aside from QR2's filtered CV modulation, the only audio filtering is from the outboard cocoquantus 2 running through a second squawk dirty 24dB LPF. none of the analog or digital oscillators are directly filtered. tš-l's unmodified sine wave runs through an antumbra dual VCA, controlled by the first channel of an intellijel quadra ASR. the second quadra channel is used to play slow swells from plaits. mixers, effects: all four oscillators are mixed by toppobrillo stereomix2, which has an effects send to a second happy nerding FXaid, this one running a stereo ping-pong delay algorithm. the SM2 runs into knob.farm hyrlo alongside the external cocoquantus audio, and finally knob.farm ferry, which has an effects send into FXaid XL's blackhole reverb. ferry then runs into the output module, knob.farm ooots, which occasionally adds a measure of warm tape-style saturation & harmonics. ciat-lonbarde cocoquantus 2: the three mutable instruments oscillators are multed and submixed to cocoquantus via 2hp buffmult and tenderfoot electronics ease, where their gentle melodies are stacked, swirled, and bitfuzzed through CQ2's lo-fi 8-bit mono loopers as sequential decaying looping delays. that audio is brought back into the modular for further filtering and processing: endorphin.es squawk dirty LPF, strymon magneto and mutable instruments beads for two more sequential decaying looping delays, plus granular reverb. the wash of soft grit then joins the modular voices for end-of-chain downsampled reverb and saturation. recorded march 16 2024. video kindly provided by @JohnoWells . #modular #ambient #cocoquantus
