Over the years, the farm has expanded to 1.25 acres, now cultivating a diverse range of crops, including: Cabbage, Collard Greens, Kale, Moruga Red Peppers, Scotch Bonnet Peppers, Summer Squash, Sweet Peppers, Sweet potatoes, Tomatoes, West Indian Red Peppers, West African Garden Eggs, and Winter Squash. The name Forty Acre Farms is deeply significant, paying homage to the emancipated enslaved Africans who were promised "forty acres and a mule" to help them build a future—a promise that was never fulfilled. Through their work, Sei and Melissa aim to reclaim that vision of self-sufficiency and land ownership, building a farm that uplifts their community and celebrates African and Caribbean agricultural traditions. Long-term, they hope to expand the farm to a full forty acres of land, creating a lasting legacy of sustainability, empowerment, and cultural heritage. Melissa is a seasoned real estate broker and has owned and operated Forty Acres Realty in Madison since 2004. Before launching her real estate business, she worked as an information technology professional at American Family Insurance. Prior to starting Forty Acre Farms, Sei was a mortgage professional for over 20 years. He first owned a mortgage company before transitioning to corporate America, where he worked for major financial institutions such as Chase, US Bank, and Johnson Financial Group. His deep understanding of finance and business operations has been instrumental in growing the farm into a thriving agricultural enterprise. Their latest venture, Rasta Barista Café opened at the Black Business Hub in May 2025, where they are bringing Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee to Madison. This café introduces one of the world's finest coffees to the community and also serve as a cultural hub celebrating Caribbean flavors and traditions. Sei and Melissa are dedicated to providing fresh, high-quality produce and premium coffee while honoring the resilience, history, and contributions of Black farmers. Through their farm and café, they are building something bigger than a business—they are creating a movement rooted in self-sufficiency, culture, and community.
