The Halifax Explosion occurred on December 6, 1917, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was one of the most devastating man-made explosions in history before the atomic bombs in 1945. The disaster resulted from a collision between two ships in the Halifax Harbour. The SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship carrying highly explosive materials, and the SS Imo, a Norwegian vessel. The Mont-Blanc was loaded with wartime munitions, including benzol, picric acid, and TNT. The accident happened when the Imo, trying to avoid a collision, struck the Mont-Blanc. A catastrophic explosion followed, releasing an immense shockwave and unleashing a tsunami. The explosion was equivalent to approximately 2.9 kilotons of TNT, devastating a large part of Halifax and Dartmouth and resulting in the loss of close to 2,000 lives, with around 9,000 people injured.
