Deep in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus lies a landscape shaped by over a century of copper mining — the Skouriotissa Mine Lakes. Though these three lakes don’t have official names, they serve as technical reservoirs, formed as a direct result of mining operations. What they lack in recognition, they make up for in visual drama — bold contrasts of red soil, turquoise water, and industrial decay. 🏭 Skouriotissa Mine, located in the village of Skouriotissa (Nicosia District), is not just any mine — it’s one of the oldest still-operating copper mines in Europe. While copper was known in the area since antiquity, modern exploitation began in 1921. From 1921 to 1974, the site saw both underground and surface mining, producing over 7.8 million tons of ore. The raw ore was enriched at a processing facility near the Xeros River, and the final products were transported via a dedicated loading terminal on the same river. From 1996 to 2007, another 7.5 million tons were extracted, with an average copper content of 0.7%. Today, the surrounding lakes — filled with rainwater and runoff — are a surreal reminder of the island’s industrial past. Captured entirely by drone, this video explores the eerie beauty and powerful scale of man vs. nature. 📍 Location: Skouriotissa, Cyprus 🎥 Drone Used: DJI Mini 2 👍 If you enjoyed the video, don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe! 🛎️ Hit the bell icon to catch our next exploration from above. #Skouriotissa #CyprusDrone #MineLakes #CopperMining #AbandonedPlaces #DroneFootage #CyprusHistory #AerialView #IndustrialHeritage #SurrealLandscapes #HiddenCyprus #MiningLegacy
