The cold and dark of a Dutch winter day is palpable in the film's depictions of the politics of language, migration, identity, and belonging today. Die Middag (That Afternoon) conveys the intense struggles of those who move across a diverse range of borders in the twenty-first century, as well as the hope and promise we can create when we open our doors to shared fates and collective futures. After the screening of the film at the Culture Studies Department of Tilburg University, students gathered to hear Nafiss Nia talk about how she became a filmmaker and the steps she took to create her widely acclaimed film. In her talk, Nia discussed her move from Iran to the Netherlands, her writing process, how she translated the story to the screen, and the challenges filmmakers face during the editing process, including the inevitable sacrifices they make in producing a feature film. Nia concluded with some powerful words on the lessons she has learned, as well as on the need to keep a clear vision, embrace challenges, and maintain a growth mindset to achieve our personal and professional goals.
