Biomedical research in Mali: A symposium at the USTTB to take stock of the situation

The University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB) organized on January 25, 2024, at the Faculty of Medicine and Odontostomatology (FMOS), a scientific symposium bringing together Malian biomedical research scientists and the American partners. This activity was part of the working visit to Mali of an American delegation led by Dr. Steve Holland, Scientific Director of the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID / NIH). For more than three decades, this exemplary collaboration has led to the discovery of new treatments and new strategies for the control of the most endemic diseases in Mali, in particular malaria, tuberculosis and HIV. Thanks to this collaboration, which enabled the construction of a world-class biomedical research infrastructure at USTTB, Malian scientists, who have more than 500 published research articles to their credit, are today respected as world leaders in the fight against malaria, neglected tropical diseases and other emerging infectious diseases.
