One First Infantry Division Task Force which took control of southeast Fallujah days ago returned after overnight air strikes and artillery, to see what was left. House to house searches revealed weapons and dead bodies. Some of the Iraqi fighters were still lying in the fortified bunkers they built to help resist the American assault. In a telephone interview with reporters at the Pentagon, Marine Colonel Michael Regner, operations officer for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, said U.S. and Iraqi forces had captured more than 1,052 prisoners in Fallujah, most of them are Iraqis but some foreigners. Regner said very few of them were giving up, instead most were "fighting to the death." He said US troops and Marines were working their way back from the southern part of the city toward the northern part.
