The Czech Republic never ceases to surprise me. In this video we visit one of the country's newer narrow gauge railways, the Milovice Military Railway is a 1.8 km long 760mm narrow gauge line recreating railways that once served front line battle fields. This railway is part of a Military museum complex that includes a Tank Training Area, a Mock Vietnamese Village and an impressive Military Vehicle Museum. Milovice used to be the site of the Red Army's main base in Czechoslovakia during the 1968-1989 occupation. Today the military base and barracks are being developed for more leisurely purposes with the Museum, Tankodrom and Mirakulum theme park, linked by regular trains on open days using either steam or diesel traction. Our locomotive was of particular interest as it was used on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway (W&LLR) where it carried the number 19. It was built in Romania by “Uzinele de Fier și Domeniile din Reșița S.A” in 1954, it saw service on the Romanian Forest Railways hauling timber and from there it was sold to FC Turda cement works. After a period out of use it was restored to working order in Romania and moved to the UK in 2007 for use along side sister locomotive No.18 on the W&LLR. Both locomotives are articulated using the Klien-Lindner system. Articulation allows the locomotives to negotiate much tighter curves than an equivalent rigid frame 0-8-0 locomotive. In June 2016 it was sold and after overhaul by “Calea Ferata Ingusta” in Romania it was moved to the Milovice Military Railway.
