The sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, much better known as the sanctuary of Montenero, stands on the hill of Monte Nero, in Livorno. The complex is run by the Vallombrosan monks and is consecrated to the Madonna delle Grazie of Montenero, patron saint of Tuscany; the sanctuary also includes a rich gallery of ex-votos and, on the outside, it is preceded by the famedio, the burial place reserved for some illustrious citizens of Livorno. The sanctuary of Montenero is an architectural complex of ancient origins: in fact, according to tradition, a lame shepherd, in 1345, finding a painting depicting the Madonna at the foot of the hill, would have had a vision thanks to which he was pushed to carry the effigy up to the top of the hill, where he was cured of his illness. To commemorate the episode, a small chapel called the Apparition, dating back to 1603, was built at the beginning of the road leading to the sanctuary; this was enlarged in 1723, damaged during the Second World War and replaced in 1957 by a larger church. It was the Theatines who began the works to expand the sanctuary, which until then consisted of a simple rectangular hall. Between the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth century, a richly decorated oval-shaped atrium was added, while, around 1721 and based on a design by Giovanni del Fantasia, work began on the rear part of the church, with the insertion of a cruciform body intended to house the sacred image of the Madonna, which made the complex assume a Latin cross plan. With the suppression of religious orders by Pietro Leopoldo, the sanctuary fell into disrepair, until, when Ferdinand III took over power, it was entrusted to the custody of the Vallombrosan monks (1792), who carried out some restorations. After the restorations made between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, an important expansion was recorded between the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century by the architect Giovanni Salghetti Drioli, with the completion of the eastern courtyard and the construction of the cloister of the Vallombrosan convent; a few years later the same architect was commissioned to carry out the project of the chapel of votive candles (completed in 1988). On 27 January 2015 the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie was officially elevated to a sanctuary. Not far from the portico there is a bas-relief by Antonio Vinciguerra depicting Pope John Paul II; the work recalls the visit that the pontiff made to the sanctuary and to the city in 1982. The actual temple is preceded by an oval atrium, sumptuously decorated with paintings by Filippo Maria Galletti. From here, three entrances lead to the nave of the baroque church, covered by a wooden ceiling carved by Pietro Giambelli and where there are some paintings by Galletti himself depicting three episodes from the life of San Gaetano di Thiene; the admirable ceiling is the only one left intact in Livorno among the similar ones once present in the cathedral and in the church of the Santissima Annunziata (destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in simpler forms). At the main altar there is a splendid tabernacle, the work of Giovanni Baratta and his nephew Giovanni Antonio Cybei (1752), which contains the sacred image of the Madonna di Montenero (14th century). In the transept there are the nineteenth-century statues of San Giovanni Gualberto and San Bernardo, the work of Temistocle Guerrazzi, brother of the famous Francesco Domenico. The dome is frescoed by the Florentine artist Giuliano Traballesi and has decorations by Giuseppe Maria Terreni. Along the sides of the church there is the gallery of ex-votos, one of the richest in Italy and containing about 700 representations made between the nineteenth century and the present day.
