Howard University Men’s Basketball Hosts Youth Clinic at Charles R. Drew Wellness Center | History Full Circle On January 2, 2026, the Howard University Men’s Basketball team visited the City of Columbia to host a free youth basketball clinic at the Charles R. Drew Wellness Center. More than just a day of drills and fundamentals, this moment carried deep historical and cultural significance. The Wellness Center is named in honor of Dr. Charles R. Drew — a pioneering physician and scientist whose groundbreaking work in blood storage and transfusion continues to save lives today. During World War II, Dr. Drew served as Director of the Red Cross Blood Bank before resigning in protest of the U.S. government’s mandate to segregate the blood of African Americans from that of White Americans. Dr. Drew’s legacy is also closely tied to Howard University, where he served as Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Freedman’s Hospital and as Head of Surgery during one of the most influential chapters of his career. This clinic became a powerful reminder of how history, legacy, and community can come full circle — as long as the circle remains unbroken. Through mentorship, movement, and meaningful connection, Howard University poured into the next generation right here in Columbia. History met the future. Legacy met the youth. And the circle remained unbroken. Follow the City of Columbia X | / cityofcolumbia Facebook | / cityofcolumbia Instagram | / cityofcolumbiascgov
