The Coming Enlightenment: Reparations Now for Tomorrow

On 17 November 2025, Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission, returned to London to deliver an important and timely lecture on reparatory justice at a public lecture hosted by the ICwS. Sir Hilary provided an update on the latest negotiations for reparatory justice for transatlantic slavery, including outcomes from the Second Africa-CARICOM Summit held in Addis Ababa, which strengthened transregional solidarity on the issue. He is one of the world’s leading voices on reparatory justice. His return to the ICwS marked a significant moment in the continuing global conversation. Sir Hilary was joined by Mr. Eric Phillips, Vice Chair, CRC and Chairman, Guyana Reparations Committee; Dr. Niambi Hall Campbell Dean, Chairperson, Bahamas National Reparations Committee; and Mr. Arley Gill, Chairman, Grenada National Reparations Committee.
