Albie Sachs: In Conversation

The ICwS was delighted to host a fireside chat with Albie Sachs—anti-apartheid activist, writer, and former judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. In 1988, while recovering from injuries sustained in a car bomb attack in Mozambique, he established the South African Constitutional Studies Centre at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies. There, he worked on ideas that helped shape South Africa’s post-apartheid Constitution, widely regarded as one of the most progressive in the world. Known for his defiant optimism, Albie shared personal experience of overcoming adversity and offered a few anecdotal memories of his time at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies. 9 October 2025
