I wrote the lyrics and music for "Veiled Heart" in 1996, 1999. From conversations with women in Karachi. This song is dedicated to the “watchmen on the wall” with the hope of 2 Corinthians 3:16. Lyrics below: Veiled Heart By Susan Lafferty (Karachi, April-May 1999--from a poem written 24 November 1996) “I pour my cup of hot tea every morning,” she says, “And read my holy book— It helps me, it helps me.” “I say my prayers and use the proper language,” she says, “It helps me, it helps me.” So why is there darkness in her eyes? Confusion in her words? There’s a veil that covers And blinds her heart. Refrain Only by Your touch, Father! Only by Your touch, Lord, Will they see the Way to Truth, Will they know Your Son. Only by Your touch, Father! Only by Your touch, Lord, Will the Morning Star Break through the dark. “It’s hard to raise a family in today’s world,” she says, “I teach them our religion. And it helps them, it helps them.” “The pilgrimage, the sacrifice, tradition,” she says, “It helps them, it helps them.” So why is there emptiness inside? Confusion in their lives? There’s a veil that covers and binds their hearts. [Repeat refrain] “How long, O Lord? How long before they know You?” we ask. It seems too far to hope for And we wonder, we wonder. “The Son of God, Messiah, will know You?” we ask. We wonder, we wonder. And some days our hope is running thin, Our courage growing dim. Watchmen on the wall Grow weary in the night. [Repeat refrain]
