Welcome to BOAATS Episode 9, aboutg the movie Argo, and two books, The Master of Disguise, by Antonio Mendez, and All the Shah's Men, by Stephen Kinzer. On Nov. 4, 1979, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran, taking 66 American hostages. Amid the chaos, 6 Americans manage to slip away and find refuge with the Canadian ambassador. Knowing that it's just a matter of time before the refugees are found and likely executed, the U.S. government calls CIA operative and master of disguise and document forgery Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) to rescue them. Mendez's plan is to pose as a Hollywood producer scouting locations in Iran with a Canadian Film crew. The movie is based on one chapter in the book by Tony Mendez, "The Master of Disguise: My Secret Life in the CIA." Why the Iranians were so furious with America requires reading a second book, "All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror," by Shephen Kinzer. The "Coup" in the subtitle is the overthrow of the democratically elected nationalist prime minister Mohammed Mossadegh by the CIA and British secret service. The story is timely based both on the current turmoil in Iran, and the Trump administrations antagonizing Canada in the last 12 months (The Canadians that harbored the Americans were treated as heroes upon return home, as they were). To learn more about the changing relationship between Iran and the U.S., from Truman through Carter, listen to Episode 9 of Based on an (almost) true story. Next, we continue the story of the U.S. and Iran next week with an episode about the Iran-Contra affair.
