This footage was recorded over three days in the South Island’s biggest city, where you’ll often see a wide variety of KiwiRail diesel locomotives at work; that can include the brand-new Stadler DM locomotives if you’re lucky. The first two DMs arrived in October 2024, and are still undergoing various tests ahead of entering service. Things to look out for in this video include (but are not limited to) the famous TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific passenger trains at the start or end of their run, the rare DXR locomotives still in active service, an old DSC shunter handling the empty passenger coaches, DC 4755 still wearing the Tranz Rail blue livery, DM 8012 out on a test run and DXB 5137 still wearing the early KiwiRail Phase 1 livery.
