#geoffthompson #paulshammasian #shortfilm #inspiration I was in a London screening room watching a beautiful short film, written, shot and directed by Ludwig and Paul Shammasian called The Carriageway. I was with my wife Sharon, I leaned over to her and said (something like) "can you imagine what these lads would do with one of my scripts?" The words had just left my lips when they approached me and asked if I'd write them a film to direct. I asked if they had anything specific in mind, Paul said we'd love to make that handshake story you wrote. Handshake story?! Paul elaborated: there's a story in Watch My Back where I have a serendipitous encounter in a Coventry cafe with the man who sexually abused me as a boy, and instead of killing him dead (which had been a long term revenge plan I'd nursed), I found an unexpected and deep compassion from somewhere, forgave him and shook his hand. As soon as Paul mentioned the abuse story, and my concept of forgiveness as a metaphysical power my heart sank and my adrenalin raced and I thought I can't got there again, it's too painful. I made lots of excuses about why it was untenable, but in truth I knew even as I was saying the words, that I was declining for one reason and one reason only: I was scared. I went back to them ten minutes later and I said, I'll write the script. In my world, if a script or a story scares me, that means it has to be written, no doubt. And I am so glad I did write it, a million things happened in the process of bringing this film together - too many and too detailed and too strange to tell in this small introduction - not least that the visionary directors delivered the most beautiful film, Craig Conway was a revelation (as our lead character Malky) and (I discovered though an unrelated newspaper article) that the man who abused me as a boy, committed suicide while we were making the film (I write about the strange and beautiful revelations that this film brought me extensively in my new book Notes From a Factory Floor). The film won a lot of awards, long-listed for the Oscars, was screened in Los Angeles and netted them a Hollywood agent, and later lead us to another film (Retaliation) starring Orlando Bloom. Directed By: Ludwig Shammasian & Paul Shammasian Written by: Geoff Thompson Main Cast: Craig Conway, James Ellis, Bill Fellows, Neil McCaul Producer: Ludwig Shammasian, Jonathan Willis, Paul Manwaring
