(Note the third quarter action is not included due to camera difficulties) South Bend Central became the second undefeated high school squad in Indiana basketball history to win the crown by defeating Indianapolis Crispus Attucks in the final game 67-55. This game was the 30th consecutive victory for the Bears. Crispus Attucks had been the first to perform this f eat in 1956. The Bears and Tigers played about even in the first quarter with South Bend leading by a slim margin of 13-10. The two teams battled back and forth the second quarter with the Bears leading at halftime 29-22. In the second half, Central's rebounding strength began to tell and they went ahead to lead 49-38 at the three-quarter mark. Attucks came back in the last period and closed the margin to 59-53 with a little more than three minutes to play. At this point, the Bears took charge and finished with a burst of power. In the second half, the Bears pulled away from the Broncos when Lafayette could find the basket only twice during the last two quarters. In the second afternoon game, Crispus Attucks defeated the Gerstmeyer Black Cat s 85-71 to advance to the final game. The large margin of victory was considered an "upset" as Gerstmeyer came into the tourney with a 32-1 record and had defeated the Tigers in an early season game. Gerstmeyer took an early lead, but Attucks came back strong and was behind only 22-20 at the quarter. Half-time found the Tigers leading 42-38. Each team scored 14 points in the third period with the Tigers dominating the game the last quarter. All four teams advancing to the final tourney had been among the leaders during the season and had good records. South Bend Central 28-0, Terre Haute Gerstrneyer 32-1, Indianapolis Crispus Attucks 24-5 and Lafayette Jefferson 22-5. Sectional tourney entries drew 739 schools and new gross receipts and attendance marks were again recorded. The paid attendance for the 85 tourneys was 1,535,256. The Board of Control selected Robert Perigo of Lafayette Jefferson to receive the Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude.
