Taking inspiration from Beethoven's string quartet "Grosse Fugue", this work is a fusion of intellectual complexity and emotional intensity, pushing counterpoint and drama to its absolute limits. The work is in a titanic sonata form, with the development being a double fugue, while the coda also utilises other counterpoint techniques such as cannon and invertable counterpoint. With this piece, I hope that one is able to hear how polyphony can be effectively used to create a tragic landscape as depicted in this work.
