This was my 2nd time to Woking on the South Western Main Line featuring South Western Railway only having last visited back on January 10th 2019. Woking first opened as Woking Common on May 21st 1838 when the original London and Southampton Railway opened it's line from Nine Elms which was the original terminus of the first section out of Waterloo Bridge now todays London Waterloo. It was only a terminus for 4 months before Woking Common became a through station when the line was extended to Winchfield on September 24th. A year later the L&SR was renamed LSWR (London & South Western Railway) with todays station name of Woking dating from 1843. The line from Guildford opened by the Guildford Junction on May 5th 1845 and a few months in August was merged into the LSWR. The station signal box at Woking which today is a Grade II listed building was originally and built by the Southern Railway. The station has 6 platforms with Platforms 1, 2, 4 and 5 used by the fast and slow lines with services either via Guidlford or via Basingstoke as well as services from Alton via Fareham. Platform 6 located at the junction end for services via Guildford is sometimes occasionally used for emergencies or late running trains whilst Platform 3 is used by terminating Class 455s and 456s stoppers. The only non stoppers are the few services to and from Poole and Weymouth. The station is also a interchange for vital coach services to Heathrow Airport as well At the time of filming before lockdown according to Network Rail there were plans to remodel the junction layout to eliminate the flat junction which services via Guildford have to wait for a period of time to enable platform clearance although plans were still ongoing. The days for the Class 455s and 456s in service are sadly numbered and are due to be replaced by Class 701 Aventras built by Bombardier in Derby although they were intended to enter service in 2019 however due to ongoing difficulties with the Train Management Control Systems being non compatible on the Class 710s used for London Overground and the 720s being built for Greater Anglia meant it delayed the 701s production and testing. It wasn't until June 3 months after filming when the first 10 car Class 701 aventra was delivered to Eastleigh. These are due to replace the Class 458s and Class 707s. The purchasing of Class 701s announced in March 2018 wasn't without controversy with the Class 458s having been updated to 5 car sets from originally 4 cars and the Class 707s having only been in service for nearly 2 years although the main reason for the decision was in fact due to low leasing costs by Angel Trains of purchasing new ones instead of maintaining existing ones. The Class 442s return to the South Western Main Line in 2019 however their return was short lived due to problems with equipment activating the signals which resulted of them being taken out of service for several months whilst the issues were being resolved. They provide services to and from Portsmouth Harbour via Guildford. As for the rest of the fleet including the Class 444s, 450s, 158s and 159s were being refurbished into the South Western Railway. Class 458s future in service at present remains unknown whilst the Class 707s will move in 2021 to Southeastern to operate on the metro routes although that won't happen until all the Class 701s are in service.
