(16 Mar 2000) Voice and effects VOICED BY: Philippa Meagher (pron. Marr) A small village in India's Haryana state is eagerly awaiting President Clinton's arrival in the country on March 19 for a five-day visit to the subcontinent. He's only the second Democrat president to visit India. Carterpuri, meaning 'the abode of the Carters', was christened by former U-S President Jimmy Carter, who visited the village in 1978. Residents of Carterpuri are hoping Clinton will include their village in his itinerary, although officials say there are no plans for him to go there. VOICE-OVER: 0003 An hour's drive from New Delhi lies an Indian village with an unusual name - Carterpuri. 0009 It's named after former U-S President Jimmy Carter, who came here in 1978. 0014 His mother Lillian used to work in the area as a social worker and villagers say she lived in this crumbling house. 0022 The Carter family has achieved cult status here in Carterpuri. 0026 SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) Dhan Singh Yadav, Carterpuri resident 0029 This man says Jimmy Carter was born in the village and spent his early childhood here. 0034 Among the most prized possessions the villagers have are photographs taken during Carter's famous visit. 0041 It's with a sense of pride that the head of Carterpuri post office remembers the few hours he spent with the former U-S president and his wife, Rosalyn. 0051 SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) Kartar Singh, Head of Carterpuri post office 0054 He said when the villagers realised that the president's mother used to live here, they welcomed him like family. 0101 Letters from the White House are an important part of village heritage. 0106 Some of the villagers' fondest memories are of Rosalyn Carter, the former First Lady, who dressed in traditional Indian costume during the visit. 0115 These people are now looking forward to President Clinton's trip to India. 0120 But this time they might have to be content with watching the presidential visit on television.
