(7 Sep 1997) English/Nat Mother Teresa - who passed away on Friday - began her charity work with just a few helpers in Calcutta five decades ago. Her order now has more than four-thousand nuns and runs 517 orphanages, homes for the poor, AIDS hospices and other charity centres around the world. In the Indian capital New Delhi, nuns belonging to Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity order gathered for prayers. The sisters - along with some of the orphans they sheltered - paid their respects to their lost mother superior. Mother Teresa began her charity work with just a few helpers in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta 50 years ago. Her order has now spread all over the world, with more than four-thousand nuns and 517 orphanages, homes for the poor, AIDS hospices and other charity centres. In the Leprosy Mission of New Delhi that Mother Teresa set up, a patient explains why she was such a unifying figure. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Like that Mother Teresa was serving for everybody for every religion. She was not having any affection for any particular religion. She has worked in Bharat (India), she has worked in Bangladesh. She has done so much for the human being that she is actually a mother." SUPER CAPTION: Patient at Leprosy Mission Mother Teresa retained her simplicity and humility despite an avalanche of international fame. Sisters working at the Mission learned from Mother Teresa's patient, hands on approach. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It was such a privilege for us. Mother has taught us from the beginning how to reach out to the poor, love and service. We have so many people, leper patients, orphan children, people dying on the streets, all these unwanted, unloved people, all these have been taken care of by Mother Teresa." SUPERCAPTION: Sister at Leprosy Mission in Delhi Mother Teresa's body will lie in state in St. Thomas's Catholic Church in Calcutta until her funeral on Saturday 13 September.
