This video is part of a series that works hand-in-hand with Inclusive: A Microsoft Design Toolkit. The intent is to support designers and developers to innovate in a way that puts humans first, on a universal scale. The film shows the power of inclusive design through personal stories and innovative projects. We open with a focus on the need for understanding human diversity by revealing several stories by designers and people involved who explain how, more than accessibility, inclusive design creates environments and products serving diverse needs that lead to inclusivity. Projects at the heart of this, like design students in Dundee university developing products for their grandparents, show how user-centered design ensures technology does feel intimate and tailored. It maps the evolution of thinking about inclusive design from physical accessibility in public buildings to products to today's media, service, and social participation. Inclusive Design Research Center, established in 1993, testifies to the need for variation in design teams themselves. Personal stories, like that of a cancer patient who benefited from utilizing PillPack's medication management service, give meaning to inclusive design. Innovations like Skype Translator transcend the barriers of language and the barrier of hearing, helping people communicate and share cultures. The film shows that inclusive design is business-as-usual for a participative process where engagement with marginalized groups is right at the beginning. Focusing on edge cases and designing for extreme situations increases usability for all. As it has been explained, the message is quite simple: Human diversity is a treasure, and Inclusive Design holds the keys to just that; A much more connected and empathetic world.
