Roedningsby died from wounds sustained when his vehicle was hit by a rocket while on a mission in Kabul on Sunday, according to the Norwegian Joint Command. He is the first Norwegian to die whilst serving in Afghanistan. A second soldier was wounded in the incident, but two others were unhurt. Speaking in Kabul, ISAF spokeswoman Major Rita LePage said two Afghans were briefly detained at the scene but were quickly released and had "not been implicated whatsoever." A search for two other suspects was also dropped. Norway's military said the vehicle, which wasn't armoured, was struck by the rocket-propelled grenade as it travelled at the head of a four-vehicle convoy on Jalalabad Road, a main thoroughfare in the capital, Kabul. NATO officials in Afghanistan said it was unclear who was behind the attack, but Abdul Hakim Latifi, a man who claims to speak for the Taliban, told The Associated Press in Kabul that nine of its fighters carried out the attack. In a statement, NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer expressed his sympathies to the soldier's family and to Norway over what he called "an appalling act of senseless violence." Norway, a NATO member and major contributor of international peacekeepers, has about 230 troops in Afghanistan. They are part of the 33-country, 5,500-troop ISAF. Norwegian Defence Minister Kristin Krohn Devold said the Nordic country would continue with its duties in Afghanistan. Roedningsby, 29, was from the town of Gjoevik, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Oslo and served with the elite Telemark Task Force. He held the rank of Grenader, a Norwegian rank used to designate enlisted volunteers with vocational skills.
