The centuries of the Roman Empire were the most extensively and intensively urbanised period in the history of the Mediterranean world until the 19th century. Some Roman cities ceased to be occupied after the Roman period and have survived into our days as purely archaeological sites with - at most, a few houses or a village on top or nearby. Portus. The changes in the estuary of the Tiber caused the abandonment of first the original port city of Ostia and of its successor which developed around the port itself - hence the name.
