Today, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas gave a speech on the situation in Ukraine at the European Parliament and discussed the security situation in Europe and its role in a changed world with members of the parliament. #Estonia According to Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Ukraine came under attack in 2014 because it wanted to join the European Union, and it came under armed attack on 24 February because it seeks to take its rightful place among free and democratic European countries. “In the words of one humanitarian worker, ‘in a conflict, always watch which way the refugees are going’. In the current war, they are headed for the EU, not #Russia,’” said Prime Minister Kaja #Kallas in #Strasbourg and added that we would need to support the government and population of #Ukraine in any way possible. “It is not only in our interest to give Ukraine a membership perspective; it is also our moral duty to do so. Ukraine is fighting not just for Ukraine, it is fighting for Europe. If not now, then when?”, the prime minister called for the fulfilment of Ukraine’s European dream in the European Parliament. According to Kallas, the world will not return to what it was before 24 February 2022. “We will, in the future, speak of the Before Times and the After Times,” said Kallas, according to whom the European Union has been at the forefront of the response of the free world. “We have, indeed, acted as a geopolitical union,” she said. The prime minister stressed the importance of hardwiring our fundamental change of heart into a policy of smart containment. “We are in this for the long haul. We will have to exercise strategic patience, because peace is not going to break out tomorrow. Russia expects us to make a step back soon,” Kallas emphasised. “That means that we need to keep supporting those fighting for Ukraine’s independence, while giving time for the sanctions and isolating measures to work to their full capacity,” she said. “Here in the EU, we need to push harder and faster to cut our energy dependence on Russian gas and oil,” the prime minister said, adding that it also contributes to the green transition. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas also directly addressed the people of Russia: “Dear Russian friends, the European Union is not acting against you. Our measures are intended to isolate President Putin and his government, which is conducting a brutal war against Ukraine.” She added that we continue to hope for a democratic and stable Russia that is respectful of its neighbours and is governed by the rule of law. She highlighted the importance of breaking Putin’s wall of lies that has also left ordinary Russians without access to the truth. “It is a complicated task, we need to mobilize our technological potential to win the war for truth. And it goes without saying that global Internet platforms have a huge role to play,” Kallas said. According to the prime minister, to strengthen European defence, the EU needs to work hand-in-hand with NATO. “A stronger European defence means planning our spending wisely and in coordination. We must concentrate on those capabilities that are too expensive for any individual Member State to develop on its own, such as long-range air defence, including missile defence,” she explained. In addition to the joint response of member states, Kallas also commended the response of the civil society. “Our citizens have responded as well. By opening their pocketbooks and their hearts. By welcoming refugees, often into their own homes. By volunteering on humanitarian missions. By collecting food, clothing, and medicines for those fleeing the war,” she said. “Our citizens are showing a generosity of spirit that makes me proud to be Estonian and proud to be a European,” she added. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is the first head of government to give a speech as part of the new series of sessions called “This Is Europe” by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament. The heads of state and government of all 27 Member States are planned to be invited to the sessions in the future. https://eudebates.tv/ #eudebates
