Surkanda Devi Temple is a major Hindu temple located in the Tehri Garhwal district of the state of Uttarakhand. The temple is located near Kanatal village at an altitude of about 2,756 m (9,042 ft) above sea level, about 8 km from Dhanaulti. According to mythology, the temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where the body parts of Goddess Sati fell. As per the story, King Daksha organized a yagna in which Lord Shiva was not invited. Hurt by this insult, Sati immolated herself in the yagna kund. The grief-stricken Lord Shiva lifted Sati's body and performed a tandava dance, causing imbalance in the universe. To handle the situation, Lord Vishnu divided Sati's body into 51 parts with his Sudarshan Chakra. It is believed that Surkanda Devi Temple is located at the place where Sati's head fell, hence the name "Surkanda". To reach the temple, devotees have to trek about 2 km from Kaddukhal. The place is also famous for its natural beauty and Himalayan views all around. On special occasions, like Ganga Dussehra and Navratri, huge crowds of devotees throng here, as it is believed that darshan of the goddess liberates one from the sins of seven births. Raunsali leaves are distributed as prasad in the temple, which are considered to be full of medicinal properties. According to local beliefs, keeping these leaves in the house brings happiness and prosperity. Surkanda Devi Temple is not only a center of religious faith, but also a symbol of natural beauty and cultural heritage, which attracts both devotees and tourists.
