The most powerful, best equipped, and most capable Tundra ever from Toyota. But does that mean it’s good enough to tackle some of the best from the states? First we’re going to start on the road and chat about what it’s like to drive where it will spend most of its life And then we’ll head up to Road America to find out how it does around their offroad course The big story here is that everything is new for this truck. For this year it’s riding on a new, stronger, lighter, more rigid chassis. It’s got a new powertrain, a new transmission, and a new rear end suspension architecture. So we’ve got a lot to talk about One of the more interesting things, i think, is the powertrain here. It’s the iForce MAX engine, which we didn’t have in the red limited we drove earlier It does take the same 3.5TTV6 from that truck, but it adds a hybrid component So at this point you’re probably saying to yourself, “well it’s a hybrid it probably gets way better fuel economy” Well, not exactly. We’ve been returning about 16 or 17 mpg which is about the same OR WORSE as we got in the Ford Raptor, and we’re not beating on this thing as much as we did with the Raptor The thing that I notice more from the hybrid powertrain than fuel economy is power This iForce Max engine puts out a whopping 437hp and..get this 583 lbft. And you can feel it! We towed my parents boat downtown and back and under power you could hardly tell we were towing anything! This thing is crazy powerful, but it won’t stop shouting fake V8 noise at you through the cabin speakers. The question that’s always left in my mind when I hear hybrid truck is, “how is the transmission going to deal with the engine cutting in and out? How smooth is the truck going to be?” I’ll put it this way - I had to really look for places the truck would thunk around. The electric engagement is really smooth and then when the engine comes to life you can hardly tell It’s more noticeable when the turbo spools than when the engine cuts in and out All that is to say, the new 10 speed transmission fits here very nicely. It works better than the Ford Powerboost 10 speed and it’s smooth than the Lexus LX gearbox tuning Steering is pretty numb and turning circle is pretty atrocious, but what did you expect this is a big truck on Falken Wildpeak A/T tires. But that then brings me to the last major structural change for this generation And we’re talkin about the rear suspension. No more leaf springs We keep the solid rear axle, but we go for a multi-link rear suspension with, of course this being the TRD Pro, Fox shocks And I’m going to compare this to the Raptor one more time since it ALSO has a multilink rear with Fox shocks This is the best riding Tundra ever, but it’s still no Raptor And with that said, I’m not sure it’s fair to be comparing this to a Raptor. The trucks both start near 70 grand, but the Tundra comes decked out at that price where the Raptor is going to need another 10k or so to make it comparable to the Tundra. However, with both trucks coming with 3.5 TT V6 engines making over 400 hp and 500 lbft, both trucks being off-road ready, and both trucks having very similar suspension philosophy and hardware..it’s hard not to make the comparison, and whether it’s fair or not i’ll probaly do a studio piece revisiting the comparison after this video. So is it a Raptor fighter? Is it not? There’s a lot of way that can be determined, but what you need to know here, on the road… The engine is wildly powerful The transmission is really smooth The ride is pretty good, not perfect The cabin is pretty refined And it’s probably exactly what the Tundra needed to compete with the America trucks
