Architecture graduate students in the Tyler School of Art and Architecture are creating the building blocks for a sustainable future — Flaxcrete! If you haven’t heard of Flaxcrete yet, you certainly will! Graduate students who took part in the Architecture Summer Design-Build Studio at Temple Ambler worked closely with Jeff Richards, RA, Assistant Professor of Instruction in Architecture in the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, to develop a biogenic building material using a by-product of flax (Linum usitatissimum). “Linum usitatissimum is a Latin phrase meaning most useful fiber. The project started with a study across a wide range of scales, beginning with the planetary scale — thinking about architecture’s response to climate change and the decarbonization of the building sector,” Richards said. “That segued into the urban scale consideration of urban agriculture and the potential possibilities for North Philadelphia and finally ended with the material investigation, which we’ve essentially tried to invent and continue to develop — a carbon neutral or carbon positive masonry product.” The project has provided numerous opportunities for collaborative partnerships with Temple’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Lab, Tyler’s Fibers and Material Studies department, Mechanical Engineering, Tyler's City and Regional Planning and Community Development department, the Tyler Horticulture and Landscape Architecture programs and the Temple Ambler Field Station — the flax was grown and harvested by the Architecture students at the Ambler Campus.
