"If the singer leaves, the songs will remain, Bringing together the broken and suffering hearts." “Lao Rahal Soti” began its life as a protest song, written by the Syrian songwriter and dissident Samih Choukeir during the uprising against the brutal Assad Regime, but has gained new traction in North America in this arrangement by the Palestinian-Jordanian-Canadian composer Shireen Abu-Khader. In her composer notes, Abu-Khader says: “I hope that the universal message of this beautiful melody resonates with all, reminding us that the voices of all those who have been silenced continue to resonate in our music.” But the piece has a particular resonance with the plight of the people of Gaza: Israel’s war has killed 72,000 Palestinians to date, including tens of thousands of children, and hundreds of journalists, UN aid workers, and doctors. I want to feel motivating anger — at these egregious statistics, and at the callousness of American leaders to Gaza’s destruction — but struggle to escape despair in the face of this immense suffering. However, voices can do more than sing; they can call out injustice and advocate directly for the suffering. This holiday season, more than any other I can remember, it is essential that we each take on the responsibility of speaking out against cruelty and injustice when we see it. I hope that, inspired by the message of this song, you’ll raise your voice in the service of someone in need.
