The New Consort | Moulu: Fiere attropos

“What harm did she do to you, today or tomorrow, That noble lady for whom France mourns greatly?” The ravishing Fiere attropos/Anxiatus est by Pierre Moulu (1484? - c. 1550) captures the national mood of mourning at the death of Anne of Brittany, Queen Consort of France and one of the Renaissance’s great musical benefactors, in 1514. Breaking from the tradition of past déplorations, which featured a lamenting first section followed by a prayer for the soul of the departed, this work ends where it began, railing still against “cruel death.” This performance is from The New Consort’s February 2023 program Sounding Memory, which was co-curated by Artistic Director Brian Mummert and composer and scholar Simon Frisch.
