When pull-starting the Predator 212 Hemi that I just installed on my Doodlebug, I'm getting severe "kickback" from the pull cord. The timing on the ARC billet flywheel is advanced to 32 degrees. Obviously, this isn't happening for most people, otherwise, ARC wouldn't have designed the flywheel as such. As I say in the vid (and has been suggested by Shaun at Hot Rod Mini Bike & the rep at ARC Racing), the most common cause is improper valve lash. I haven't checked it after heat cycling the motor, but I did check it after adjusting the valve lash, and it was 0.002" and 0.003". It's definitely specific to the billet wheel. It was doing it when I first installed the billet wheel, then I swapped the stock flywheel back on and...no kickback at all. When I put the billet wheel back on, kickback returned. I asked the rep at ARC Racing if there's a way to reduce the timing, and he suggested putting on a timing key backward. Normally, people install them on the shafts to increase timing, but if I reverse it, it would retard timing by 4 deg. instead of advancing it 4 degrees. But other than that solution, the possibility that the valve lash crept, I'm miffed as to what else it might be. Don't know if this is related, but I should mention that the initial start wasn't good. I removed the governor as soon as I got it unboxed it. Being just above notice to small engines, I neglected to properly connect the throttle linkage. Upon initial start-up, the throttle was at or near WOT. Not good! So it ran at God only knows what rpms for a few seconds. I also installed 26 lb valve springs. I initially installed a long-duration Dyno cam, but in hand-rotating the motor just afterward, I discovered that the lobe was contacting what I thought was the connecting rod. After talking to the ARC guy, he said it might be the crank shaft that the cam is hitting. So I took it out and put the stock cam back in. I've changed the oil twice now, with about 30-40 minutes of run time between the changes, and the oil doesn't look so hot...gray. So the warning by Shaun and the ARC rep, that the non-hardened metal might not be tolerating the 26 lb springs too well. Whether or not that has anything to do with the kickback, can't say. Lastly, while the motor feels very strong overall, and runs smoothly most of the time, there is some consistent minor stuttering, noticeable most often when first giving it some throttle. None while accelerating through the rpm range. Possibly some while "cruising" as well.
