Railroad Revival: Mass Coastal Falmouth Line

A few years back this line lost it’s only regular freight customer resulting in the track being underutilized. A section of the line was used by the Cape Cod Central for their Saturday night dinner trains as well as their annual North Falmouth departure. Otherwise the track was basically dormant and even was threatened by trail lobbyists who only wanted to see the tracks torn up to be used as a bike path. Fortunately Falmouth started shipping trash to Semass again in 2017 and a new C&D customer also set up shop at Otis not long after. In 2020 a state funded tie and ballast job was complete and brought the line back into decent shape. Speeds also increased from 10 to 30MPH after the work was done. A weekly or more freight train continues to run today as well as the Cape Cod Dinner Train on weekends.
