KLIPLAND NATURE CREATION – stories of local foodways, plants and living land

This video is an after-movie of our participatory arts project with the Klipland Collective in Beukeskraal, Cederberg. The initiative is part of a long-term engagement and PhD research on food sovereignty with the community. The project explored ways of sharing research through co-creative and accessible practices, while strengthening intergenerational food knowledge transfer. Over three days, we shared knowledge through nature walks and storytelling circles, which were then translated into natural art by local children and youth. All paints and materials were made from local natural resources such as dassiepis, clay, charcoal, donkey hair, and wood. Together, we mapped the local food system, from food gardens to medicinal plants, with elders sharing stories as children painted. Along the way, we also created songs about local foods, danced, and spent time celebrating together. A big thank you to the Klipland mense for the wisdom, creativity, and joy shared throughout this project.
