For Sexagesima (Epiphany 6) 2022 The name of this piece (La Béatitude) translates variously as 'happiness', 'deliverance' or 'salvation'; I have taken the liberty of attaching it to today's Gospel reading on The Beatitudes. It's taken from the ‘Pièces Choisies’ of 1712 by Charles Piroye (approx 1670-1730), a pupil of the great Lully and a contemporary of François Couperin. He became a celebrated Parisian organist, but little is now known about him. His organ compositions were unusual for the period, not being tied into specific liturgical functions within the Mass. This piece is titled ‘La Beatitude, Dialogue a deux Choeurs, Simphonie’, and comprises a dialogue between the robust 'Grands Jeux' of the main organ and the smaller-scaled 'Petit Jeux' of either the main or the smaller Orgue du Choeur (choir organ). It is laid out in the typical 3-movement symphony form of the era - a grand and stately first movement, a quieter and gentle second movement ('Tendrement') and a vigorous third. The last of these in particular is quite remarkable in its energy. Images: paintings and icons of the Beatitudes, including works by Tissot and Rosselli. Temperament: modified meantone Played by Peter Christie on the Viscount Envoy FV-350 digital organ as part of the online music programme for St John's Episcopal Church, Greenock, Scotland.
