In this new episode of The Driver’s Seat, Henry Catchpole gets behind the wheel of the incredible Totem Automobili GT Super. At first glance you might think this is just an Alfa Romeo Giulia GT restomod - a refresh and update of the ’60s original. But with a carbonfibre chassis, carbonfibre bodywork and a unique twin-turbo V6 engine form Italtecnica, this is basically a brand new car. In Porsche 911 terms, think Ruf rather than Singer. And just as fascinating as the car, is the person behind it; Riccardo Quaggio. The young, 29 year-old designer has built the company from the ground up, starting with very little money and a warehouse given to him by his Grandfather. He started in 2018 and it is remarkable to see how far he has come. He has aspirations of Totem Automobili one day being talked about in the same breath as the likes of Pagani, and on the evidence of the GT Super we wouldn’t bet against it. To really put the car through its paces, we went a couple of hours north of the factory in the Veneto region of Italy up onto the beautiful Vezzena pass. With a fabulous mix of fast, flowing bends and tight, twisty corners it was the perfect setting. The car’s manual gearbox and 670bhp going to the rear wheels mean that the driver is kept very busy, but the R53 dampers and double wishbone suspension are on your side. A quick shout out to Glenn Winhall (ably assisted by Daniel Pendlebury) on this film as he really pulled out all the stops. If you noticed something particularly delicious about some of the visuals it’s because he used anamorphic cinema lenses for a number of the scenes. Something that we hope you’ll agree was worth the extra effort. If you enjoy the film then do please think about subscribing to the channel and giving this a thumbs up or leaving a comment.
