Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David revolutionized the sitcom with Seinfeld. They instituted a “no hugging, no learning” policy to focus solely on the laughs, and they pioneered a technique of dovetailing storylines into ironic twist endings.  But more specifically, Seinfeld gave every comedian in the world a perfect roadmap to a TV career. Playing a fictionalized version of themselves would accommodate for their limited acting ability, lean into their on-stage persona, and promote their standup. Lots of comedians have followed in Seinfeld’s footsteps, but they haven’t all been worthy successors to an old classic. Seinfeld Inspired A Lot Of Sitcoms About Comedians  After Seinfeld took off, we saw a wave of sitcoms starring comedians as themselves: Louie, Maron, Mulaney. Seinfeld’s own co-creator Larry David played himself in his show, Curb Your Enthusiasm. Some of these comics created fictional avatars, like Garry Shandling with Larry Sanders, while others just played themselves, like Drew Carey on The Drew Carey Show. Crashing Is About The Struggle Of Starting Out On The Standup Scene  In almost all of these Seinfeld-inspired shows, the comic is already successful. When we meet Jerry in Seinfeld, he’s already a headliner on the road with regular gigs at the local New York clubs. In The Larry Sanders Show, Larry has a hit talk show. In Curb Your Enthusiasm, David is semi-retired after getting rich off Seinfeld.  We never see Jerry bombing at an open mic night. We never see Louie handing out flyers in the hope of getting five minutes on stage. That’s what sets Pete Holmes’ criminally underrated HBO series apart. Crashing is all about the struggle of starting out as a standup comic, and the uphill battle of making it on the New York comedy scene.  In the first episode, Pete’s wife cheats on him and he ends up spending the night on Artie Lange’s couch. From then on, we watch a newly single, newly homeless Pete going to open mic gigs, staying with other struggling comedians, sneaking free lunches at a bodega, and eventually working his way up to paid jobs at
