Master Teaching Series: Enhancing Social Learning in Asynchronous Online Courses Using Perusall

Presenter: Dr. Amanda Eller, Teaching and Educational Studies Description: Perusall is a social learning platform designed to make course materials more interactive and engaging. Students annotate readings, ask questions, and respond to one another directly within the text, creating meaningful, discussion-rich learning experiences. The platform also supports multimodal instruction by easily incorporating instructor explanations, videos, podcasts, graphics, and web-based resources. Perusall can be used in fully online, hybrid, or in-person courses. In online environments, it can serve as a central learning hub; in synchronous or face-to-face courses, it enriches engagement between class meetings. Instructors can review student annotations ahead of time to identify misconceptions, target instruction, and reduce class time previously spent summarizing readings. This session will demonstrate how Perusall integrates with Canvas and how it can strengthen social and multimodal learning across a wide range of course types.
