Now that I’m a commercial pilot, I want to focus more on refining my control inputs. One of the techniques is to look at the ground during pickups and set downs. This is not recommended for new pilots. Since I’m solo, I added 40 pounds under the left seat and 30 pounds in front of the left seat. All left seat controls were removed as well. With two people, the R44 usually picks up right skid first. With this setup, it picked up nose first. At one point I did a pickup with a left crosswind and the left skid picked up first, which confused me at first. I was told this is not unusual when solo due to the wind and being light on the left. Left box drills in the wind were easy, but right box drills were a little more challenging. Leading up to the tail passing through a tailwind required a lot of right pedal pressure. After the tail passed through the tailwind, I had to be quick with the left pedal to manage the turn rate. Winds were 13 gusting to 19.
